Somewhere to worship while you're in Tokyo. 44 churches with services in English, bilingual services, or English interpretation — across Catholic, Anglican, Lutheran and Protestant traditions. Every service time here was checked against the church's own website; where we could not confirm it, we left the church off.
Congregations here are small by most countries' standards. Christians are a small minority in Japan, and many of these churches meet in rented rooms, office floors or cafes rather than in a church building. Several run their English service at a different hour from the Japanese one, so check the time rather than assuming the main morning slot.

Church in Japan: what's different
If you already worship at home, most of this will feel familiar. These are the things that tend to surprise people the first time they go to church in Japan.
- Expect a small congregation
- Christians are a small minority in Japan, and a typical church here has a few dozen people rather than a few hundred. The English-speaking churches on this page are among the larger ones, but several still meet in a rented room or a cafe. A quiet room with thirty people is normal, not a sign that something is wrong.
- Communion is not always open
- Practice differs by church and you should not assume your home church's rule applies. Receiving the bread and wine is usually limited to the baptised, and in the Catholic Church people baptised in other traditions are generally not able to receive — the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Japan states this plainly. Many Catholic parishes will give a blessing instead if you come forward with your arms crossed. If you are unsure, ask someone before the service, or stay in your seat.
- Your own denomination may not be here
- Japan's Protestant landscape does not map onto the American or British one. The largest Protestant body is the United Church of Christ in Japan (Kyodan), a 1941 union of several denominations, so a church that looks unfamiliar by name may be closer to your tradition than you expect. Baptist, Lutheran, Anglican, Pentecostal and non-denominational churches all exist here, but often as a single congregation rather than a network.
- "Bilingual" means different things
- English only — the whole service is in English. Bilingual — both languages run together throughout, so roughly half of what you hear will be Japanese. Japanese with English interpretation — the sermon is preached in Japanese and interpreted for you, sometimes through headphones, and the hymns and liturgy usually stay in Japanese. Each listing above says which. If you want a service you can follow end to end without any Japanese, use the "English only" filter.
- The English service is often not the main one
- Many of these churches are Japanese congregations that also run an English service, frequently in the early afternoon rather than the morning. Turning up at the usual 10am slot can mean sitting through a Japanese service. Check the time on the listing.
- Visitors are noticed, and usually welcomed
- In a congregation this size a newcomer does not blend in. You will probably be greeted, and at some churches asked to write your name on a card — you can decline. Tea or a shared meal after the service is common, and is the easiest point to talk to someone.
Please check before you travel. Service times change, and some churches suspend services during summer or over holidays. Every entry here was verified against the church's own website, but the church's own announcement is always more current than this page.
